A mentor once told me you marry your mission but you date your plan. I’m not sure why but looking at it this way caused something to click for me. We’re 100% committed to our mission. Absolutely nothing is going to get in our way. The plan however can be kicked to the curb at the first sign it is not the right one.  We’ve all done it… we spent weeks coming up with the absolute perfect plan to help us accomplish a personal or professional goal. We analyzed every path we could possibly imagine. We probably even did a ton of math to work through the economics to make sure we knew how much time and money we would have to invest in the success of this plan. Fast forward six months and the plan isn’t working but we have so much time and energy invested in the plan we stick with it for longer than we should. I’ll be the first to admit there are times where it can be a tough pill to swallow for your ego to admit that the plan you’ve poured your heart and soul into isn’t working yet sometimes it’s time to go whale hunting. Not sure what the heck I’m talking about? When your plan isn’t working sometimes it’s okay to take a shot at something huge. Something your gut has always told you would work but you didn’t feel it was worth the risk or time you would have to invest in it. You definitely don’t want to build your entire plan around this idea however sometimes it isn’t crazy to take that shot to land the giant developer of a 1000 home community or the hedge fund manager responsible for deploying hundreds of millions into a state. You may be surprised that you land the deal. This message comes with a warning label. Don’t run out and build a career out of whale hunting. Sometimes you need to mix things up a big to get that adrenaline going as you transition to the new plan.
