I intentionally picked that title just to catch attention. I don’t actually mean give up on your goal. I do however believe focusing on a 12 month goal in 2023 could create some unnecessary challenges. We’ve all been there as leaders, we spend a lot of time, energy, and effort getting buy-in from those in our care, casting a vision, and holding them accountable to actions. What happens next? Things change and we have to start all over. Typically those changes happen in market cycles so it doesn’t have a huge impact on the overall team and the changes are justifiable. I believe 2023 will be a different animal. I think we will continue to see changes throughout the year and if we aren’t careful we could end up pivoting a lot more than usual. What’s the solution? Focus on the quarter. My suggestion is to get hyper focused on what you need to accomplish in q1. At the end of the quarter do a recap with the team and get commitments to keeping what is working and eliminating what didn’t. This will prevent everyone from getting whiplash from change every few weeks and force you to stay on top of what’s working and what isn’t.
